Due to the particular weather conditions of the Mar Menor, with a great number of hours of sun a year and high salinity levels, some muds suitable for therapeutical treatments have been stocked for centuries at its northern end in Las Charcas de las Salinas. These muds, within the protected natural área Las Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar, constitute Europe´s biggest open-air mud therapy área. Mar Menor muds have a high percentage of fine and very fine sands (muds and clays), a high composition of cations, such as calcium and magnesium, or anions, such as chloride and sulphate, as well as basic pH. That is why they constitute a great remedy for many types of skin diseases. Besides, their high temperatures make them suitable as anti-inflammatories in case of rheumatism, arthritis, gout, rehabilitation after bone fracture. The salinity of the crystallising ponds is similar to that of the Dead Sea.
